The Catholics know how to do a resurrection. So it’s no surprise that a notable Catholic emerged from her cave just in time for an important tradition in their culture — the Al Smith Dinner. The annual white-tie event is known not only for raising money for various Catholic charities, but for being an opportunity for presidential candidates to get their comedy on. While Harris was absent at the dinner, instead spending time with the Wisconsin cows, she sent in a video co-starring Molly Shannon as her beloved Superstar character Mary Katherine Gallagher — an untalented, attention-starved Catholic schoolgirl with a penchant for falling over and making a huge mess. This was Mary Katherine’s first appearance since Saturday Night Live’s 40th-anniversary special in 2015. Notably, Mary Katherine did not fall over anything in the video message, though whether that was for Shannon’s safety or for Harris’s, who can say?
“Don’t lie,” Mary Katherine advised Harris on how to impress the Catholic community. “Thou shall not bear false witness to thy neighbor.”
“Well, indeed, especially thy neighbor’s election results,” Harris quipped back. Got ’em! Shannon followed up with another important rule: “Don’t say anything negative about Catholics.” However, Trump was still fair game, as he had some choice words for Harris for not showing up. At least Harris has the clout to recruit beloved SNL characters. Maybe she can get the Lonely Island to reprise their Hot Rod characters next.
